1. When should I start looking for and booking my student accommodation?
We strongly recommend booking your accommodation 3 to 5 months before your course start date (ideally right after receiving your conditional or unconditional offer letter). Popular university halls and affordable private student residences in major university cities sell out quickly.
2. Are utility bills included in the rental price?
In most On-Campus University Halls and Purpose-Built Student Accommodations (PBSA), all basic utilities (water, electricity, heating, gas, and high-speed Wi-Fi) are 100% included in your weekly or monthly rent. In private rentals, utility bills are typically separate and must be split among flatmates.
3. What is a UK / International Guarantor, and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person or organization that agrees to pay your rent if you are unable to do so. Many private landlords and PBSA operators require a guarantor who resides in the host country. If you do not have a local guarantor, options include paying a block of rent upfront (e.g., 3 to 6 months) or using certified guarantor services (such as Housing Hand).
4. What is the difference between an "En-Suite" and a "Studio"?
En-Suite Room: You get a private bedroom with your own attached private bathroom, while sharing the kitchen and living room with 3 to 6 other flatmates. Studio Apartment: A completely self-contained living space featuring your own private bedroom, private bathroom, and private kitchenette within the same room.
5. How much security deposit do I need to pay to hold a room?
Security or holding deposits typically range from 1 to 5 weeks' worth of rent, depending on the destination country and housing provider. This deposit holds your booking and is refundable at the end of your lease, provided there is no damage to the property.
