New Zealand Student Visa Step-by-Step Process for Nepali Students
Step-by-Step Pathway
Applying for a New Zealand Student Visa requires careful financial and academic planning. Here is the official sequence:
Get University Admission:Duration: 2 to 4 weeks. Submit your academic documents, passport, SOP, and IELTS/PTE scores to your chosen New Zealand education provider (University, Te Pūkenga, or PTE) to secure your official Offer of Place.
Prepare Finances & Medicals:Duration: 3 to 4 weeks. Gather your financial documents, including an Educational Loan or Bank Balance from acceptable 'A' class banks in Nepal (Nabil, SBI, or Standard Chartered). Complete your E-Medical through an approved Panel Physician (like IOM MHAC or Norvic) and obtain a Police Report (not older than 6 months).
Submit Online Visa Application:Duration: 1 to 2 days. Fill out the online INZ application (including the INZ 1226 declaration form), upload all your beautifully scanned, single-PDF documents in order, answer the mandatory 7 character-limit assessment questions, and pay the visa fee of NZD 850.
Receive AIP & Transfer Funds:Duration: 4 to 8 weeks. Once Immigration New Zealand assesses your file, they will issue an Approval in Principle (AIP). Upon receiving this, you must transfer your 1st-year tuition fee to the college. If your AIP includes an FTS condition, you must also transfer your 1-year living cost (NZD 20,000) via the Fund Transfer Scheme.

- Offer of Place: Official admission letter from a New Zealand education provider.
- Police Report: Must not be more than 6 months old.
- E-Medical Letter: From Approved Panel Physicians in Nepal (IOM MHAC Kathmandu/Damak, Norvic Hospital, or Travel and Mountain Medicine Center).
- Financial Proof (Main Funding): Bank Balance & Statement (last 4 months with source deposit if over NZ$2000) OR an Educational Loan Letter strictly from Nabil Bank, Nepal SBI, or Standard Chartered Bank. (Note: Other A-class bank statements can be used to show supporting/regular income).
- Income Supporting Documents: 3 months of bank statements for all income sources. (Agriculture income is NOT accepted).
- Property Documents: Property Valuation Report, Redbook of all properties, and Land Mortgage Deed (with Nepali and English Translation if applying for an education loan).
- Sponsorship Documents: Letter of sponsorship with an advocate's stamp. Acceptable sponsors include: Grandparents, parents, siblings, spouse, and parents-in-law. (Uncles can only sponsor if they are PR holders of Australia or NZ).
- Relationship & ID Proofs: Relationship certificate and Citizenship certificates of all sponsors. Birth certificate (if available), and Marriage Certificate (if applicable; marriage should generally be 9+ months old for dependent applications).
- INZ Specific Forms: Student Visa Declaration form (INZ 1226).
- Digital Photo: Must be between 512 KB and 3.14 MB, taken in portrait mode with a 3:4 aspect ratio, JPG/JPEG format.
- Visa Application Fee: Proof of payment for the NZD 850 visa fee.
- INZ 7 Mandatory Questions (Funding Plan): A document answering the 7 specific INZ questions (max 1000 characters each) regarding your home commitments, relation to past study, intent for NZ, provider choice, course benefits, post-study plans, and exact funding plan for the remainder of the course.
