IELTS Reading Format & Time Management

The IELTS Reading test assesses wide-ranging reading skills: reading for gist, skimming, scanning for specific details, understanding logical argument, and recognizing writers' opinions, attitudes, and purpose.

Passage 1 (13 Questions)

Descriptive / Factual Text

Generally the most accessible text. Spend no more than 17-18 minutes here to save buffer time for the heavier passages ahead.

Passage 2 (13 Questions)

Analytical / Investigative

A more detailed report, historical inquiry, or scientific breakthrough. Allocate 20 minutes for deep detail mapping.

Passage 3 (14 Questions)

Discursive / Philosophical

The most complex academic debate with abstract concepts, conflicting researcher opinions, and subtle nuances. Reserve 22 minutes.

Academic vs. General Training Reading

Understand the core differences in text sources and scoring benchmarks.

Higher Education / UniversityIELTS Academic

Academic Reading

  • Texts sourced from university books, journals, scientific magazines, and research reports.
  • Written for a non-specialist audience but containing academic terminology and complex syntactic structures.
  • Band 7.0 Benchmark: 30 correct answers out of 40.
Migration / Work Visa (PR)General Training

General Training Reading

  • Section 1 contains 2-3 short factual texts (advertisements, timetable, community notices).
  • Section 2 contains 2 workplace texts (job descriptions, contracts, staff development guidelines).
  • Band 7.0 Benchmark: 34 correct answers out of 40 (stricter scoring margin).

IELTS Reading Question Types

Master the exact approach required for each question type tested by IDP Nepal.

True / False / Not Given (T/F/NG)

TRUE: statement agrees with the text. FALSE: statement contradicts the text. NOT GIVEN: impossible to verify from the text alone.

Matching Headings

Identify the primary gist or central theme of each paragraph from a list of roman-numeral headings. There are always more headings than paragraphs.

Matching Information & Features

Scan for specific facts, researcher names, historical dates, or experimental findings in designated paragraphs (e.g. "Which paragraph contains...").

Summary / Note Completion

Fill in blanks in a condensed summary using words taken directly from the passage or selected from a vocabulary word-bank.

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

Evaluate multiple plausible options to find the single answer that precisely captures the author's attitude or analytical inference.

Diagram / Flowchart Labeling

Understand mechanical devices, scientific cycles, or sequential procedures described in the text and label parts accurately.

7 Proven IELTS Reading Strategies

Tactics taught by certified trainers at BrightPath Kathmandu.

1

Don't Read the Entire Text Word-for-Word First

You only have 60 minutes for nearly 2,800 words. Skim title and subheadings in 1 minute, then read the questions first to know what information you are hunting for.

2

Understand the "Not Given" Rule

If the passage does not contain explicit proof that the statement is true OR false, it is NOT GIVEN. Do not use outside personal knowledge to deduce an answer.

3

Circle Unchanging Anchor Keywords

Names of scientists, proper nouns, years (e.g. 1984), capitalized place names, and percentages cannot easily be paraphrased. Scan directly for these anchors.

4

Strict 20-Minute Passage Allocation

Never spend 30 minutes on Passage 1 simply to get 13/13. It leaves inadequate time for Passages 2 and 3, causing panic and rushed guesses.

5

Watch Out for Extreme Qualifiers

Words like always, completely, only, never, impossible in questions often flip the truth value if the passage merely says frequently, generally, or possible.

6

There is NO Extra Transfer Time on PBT

Unlike the Listening test, there are NO 10 minutes at the end of the Reading test. Transfer your answers directly to the answer sheet as you finish each passage.

7

Practice with CBT Highlighting Tools

In computer-delivered IELTS, you can right-click to highlight text and leave digital notes. Practice in our lab so this becomes second nature.

IELTS Reading FAQs

Common questions answered by BrightPath instructors.

Can I write 'T' instead of 'TRUE'?

While examiners may accept 'T', 'F', 'NG', IDP officially advises candidates to write the complete words ("TRUE", "FALSE", "NOT GIVEN") clearly on the answer sheet to eliminate any ambiguity.

What is the difference between T/F/NG and Y/N/NG?

True/False/Not Given questions deal with factual information stated in the text. Yes/No/Not Given questions deal with the writer's opinions, views, or claims.

Do answers appear in order in the passage?

For most question types (Sentence Completion, T/F/NG, MCQs), answers appear in chronological order in the passage. However, for Matching Headings and Matching Information, information is scattered across paragraphs.
